1971 Pontiac Grand Ville: The B-Body Wearing a C-Body's Roof!

The 1971 Pontiac Grand Ville was Pontiac's brand-new flagship — built to outrank the Bonneville itself. But here's the part most people don't know: underneath that formal, upright roofline borrowed from the Oldsmobile Ninety-Eight, Buick Electra, and Cadillac, the Grand Ville was actually riding on the same stretched B-body platform as the Bonneville and Catalina, not a true C-body chassis. In this deep dive we cover the 1971 full-size Pontiac redesign, the fuselage styling era, the 126-inch wheelbase shared with Bonneville, the all-new "cockpit" dashboard borrowed from the Grand Prix, the standard 455 cubic-inch V8 and the compression drop that hit every GM engine that year, and why the rare 1971 Grand Ville convertible (just 1,784 built) is one of the toughest full-size Pontiacs to find today. Chapters below.
