The Watering Down of Fiction

In this video I discuss how fiction can become watered down when authors take inspiration from other fiction instead of nonfiction sources like history and culture. I explore examples from fantasy, historical fiction, and regency romances, looking at authors like Tolkien and Jane Austen. While being inspired by other authors is good, we should also consider their research methods not just their final products. I argue that the best fiction combines great characters with grounding in reality, and if you diverge from accuracy it should be purposeful rather than accidental. Let me know what you think about this concept and whether it matters for fiction writing.
