Kids learn through playing, so giving them the opportunity to assess risk and overcome their fears in play is critical to their growth and development. Halloween provides a wonderful opportunity for kids to playfully confront what scares them and build resiliency. Today's puppet show, an adaptation of the classic "The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything" is all about facing something scary and overcoming them. Why should a pair of pants by themselves be terrifying? Today's puppets and puppet show were created by Cheryl, part of our education team. Want to take today's activity a step further? Check out the classic book version of "The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything" from the library and read it. What's the same in the book and the puppet show? What's different? Let your child pick out their own favorite storybook and create their own puppet show. You don't need to craft elaborate marionettes like Cheryl did here; your child's toys (with or without DIY costumes made out of kleenex) can be the actors. Or cut figures out of paper and tape them to pencils or popsicle sticks. The possibilities are endless.
