Gelungener Auftakt für den Original Münchner Schäfflertanz 2026 auf dem Marienplatz

With an impressive performance on Munich's Marienplatz, the Original Munich Schäffler Dance ceremoniously launched its new season on January 6, 2026. At precisely 2 p.m., the heart of the city was transformed into a stage for living tradition – accompanied by great public interest and palpable enthusiasm. A special narrative opening was provided by the Münchner Kindl (Munich Child), who brought the history of the Schäffler to life for the audience. With great charm and historical context, he recalled the origins of the custom in the 16th century, when the Schäffler brought courage, hope, and optimism to the city after difficult times. Following this, Mayor Verena Dietl delivered the official greetings on the occasion of the Schäffler Dance. In her address, she praised the time-honored dance as a symbol of unity, joie de vivre, and the vibrant identity of the Bavarian capital. Afterward, the dancers of the Munich Schäffler Association (Fachverein der Schäffler Münchens e. V.) paraded across Marienplatz with barrel-tapping, hoop-swinging, and traditional music. Precise choreography, vibrant costumes, and the palpable dedication of the 25 young men brought the centuries-old tradition vividly to life. The audience's sustained applause demonstrated that this tradition continues to resonate with generations. The Schäffler Dance, whose roots stretch back to the 16th century, is performed only every seven years. This makes the personal commitment of the participants all the more remarkable, as they invest weeks of their time, energy, and annual leave to keep this important Munich custom alive. Until February 17, 2026, the Schäffler dancers will perform at numerous locations throughout the city, spreading their message of optimism, community, and joie de vivre. The opening performance in Marienplatz impressively demonstrated that the 2026 Schäffler Dance is far more than just folklore—it embodies Munich's vibrant identity.
