It's thirty-five years old and still in high demand in the transport sector. No other aircraft can carry more cargo than this Russian behemoth. At the height of the Cold War, it was a vital means of national transport and a symbol of prestige for the Soviet Union. Today, it's used worldwide and reigns supreme in international air transport. Its most recent mission: the Antonov An-124 must carry a 61-ton generator over 11,000 kilometers, from England to South Korea. Normally, it would be a piece of cake. But every job has its peculiarities. The cargo manager and his team must ensure that the cargo plane's ramp and internal rail system are positioned with absolute precision; otherwise, it would be impossible to load the generator safely. The crew works under pressure. The client pays around three hundred thousand euros for the charter flight. And every minute of delay costs even more. Before it can be loaded, the steam generator must pass special security checks to be allowed into the cargo terminal. On its way to Seoul, the An-124 must stop three times to refuel and check the cargo. The cargo plane itself must also be thoroughly inspected after each landing. Technicians carry out minor repairs right at the loading gate. But after 4,000 flight hours, a complete overhaul is required. That means that, approximately every two years, the Antonovs must be thoroughly inspected. In this way, each aircraft can be used 24 hours a day for up to 45 years. The Antonov crew has no idea that inadequate equipment and untrained workers await them at their destination.
