Are Lab Grown Corals The Biggest Breakthrough in The Reefing Industry?

Corals spawned and grown in a Lab are no longer exclusive to research and conservation labs and might change the reef keeping hobby forever - one of the most promising new concepts Ms Moonfruit and I found at Interzoo in Nuremberg, Germany - while checking out the latest and greatest innovations the pet and aquarium industry had to offer. Samuel Nietzer - Head scientist and CEO of SciReef- is the man behind this step towards the future and spawns corals commercially - so all the corals they (re)produce will be available to the aquarium market and at the end of the day, us reef keepers! I, as a veteran reefkeeper; and Ms Moonfruit as biologist; have been following coral spawning projects all over the world for over 10 years and we're very excited to see that SciReef is now also spawning and growing corals - right here in Germany. They are the closest thing we have to "tissue cultured" corals we can get! Today (yes right now) you can actually get a small range of Acropora kenti, A. tenuis, A. nasuta and A. austera! Acropora millepora will be available soon and baby Trachyphyllia are the proof, the concept also works for LPS corals - a big step for sustainability and a glimpse of what could soon be baby acanthophyllia and scolymia/homophyllia. And on top - as if reproducing corals in captivity through spawning wasn't enough - a lot of the corals we see are "Grafted". To be exact they are Chimeras - which occur when the tiny, free swimming coral larvae settle down right next to each other and fuse together - resulting in crazy new and mixed coral colors. This is a naturally occurring phenomenon, so you CAN find chimeric corals in the ocean - however they are incredibly rare, essentially 1 in a Million! When spawning corals in captivity the chance of the larvae setting close enough together and fusing is MUCH higher. Sill uncommon but it happens often and reliable enough to be something to look forward to! If you want to learn more about Chimeras, SciReef and "how to spawn corals" - check out the Deep Dive Episode 2 - where Sam and I talk about exactly that!    • Lab Grown Corals feat. SciReef | Deep Dive...   I hope you enjoy the eyecandy and learned something new!
