On Drawing: Trends in Contemporary Drawing

In conjunction with the recent publication, "Vitamin D3: Today’s Best in Contemporary Drawing" (Phaidon, 2021), please join the Menil for a program exploring key themes in contemporary drawing practice. Edouard Kopp, Chief Curator of the Menil Drawing Institute, will be in conversation with Louisa Elderton, editor of "Vitamin D3," and Anna Lovatt, art historian and contributor to the publication. Their conversation will consider recent trends in contemporary drawing and offer an in-depth look at works recently acquired by the Menil Drawing Institute by artists including Rashid Johnson, Tony Lewis, and Zarina, all who are featured in "Vitamin D3." About the speakers: Louisa Elderton is a writer, editor and art critic based in Berlin. As Project Editor of Phaidon’s ‘Vitamin’ series, she worked on "Vitamin D3: Today’s Best in Contemporary Drawings" (2021), "Vitamin T: Threads and Textiles in Contemporary Art" (2019) and "Vitamin C: Clay + Ceramic in Contemporary Art" (2017). She regularly writes for publications including "Artforum" and "Frieze," and is the German correspondent for "Flash Art." She is currently Curatorial Editor at the Gropius Bau, and has worked on books and exhibition texts for Yayoi Kusama, Zheng Bo, Thea Djordjadze, Otobong Nkanga, Zanele Muholi and Lee Mingwei, among others. Anna Lovatt is Associate Professor of Art History at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. She is the author of "Drawing Degree Zero: The Line from Minimal to Conceptual Art" (Penn State University Press, 2019). From February to June 2022, Dr. Lovatt will be the Research Fellow at the Menil Drawing Institute. About the series: On Drawing is an initiative of the Menil Drawing Institute.
