The United States announced Wednesday that it had launched additional strikes against Iran, asserting that their aim was to undermine Tehran's ability to threaten freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that the strikes were carried out "at the direction of the Commander-in-Chief," adding that the United States "holds Iran responsible for its recent unprovoked aggression against commercial vessels and their civilian crews freely transiting this vital international waterway." Axios quoted a US official as saying that the new strikes represent the second round of US attacks on Iranian targets and were more extensive than those conducted the previous day. The official explained that the attacks targeted military coastal radars, anti-ship missile sites, and air defense systems, as part of what he described as efforts to stop Iranian attacks on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. Coinciding with the US announcement, several areas in southern Iran experienced a series of explosions, amid reports of air defense systems being activated in Hormozgan province. The Iranian news agency Mehr reported hearing an explosion in Bandar Abbas, Iran's largest port on the Persian Gulf. Local sources also reported hearing explosions near Bandar Abbas and Sirik, as well as a series of explosions on Qeshm Island, though no official statement has been issued regarding their nature or cause. Iranian television confirmed hearing eight explosions in Bandar Abbas, coinciding with the activation of the city's air defense systems. Iranian media also reported that air defenses were activated in Sirik, while explosions extended to other locations in the south of the country, including Lavan, Konarak, and Chabahar. An Iranian television correspondent reported hearing three explosions in Konarak and one in Chabahar, noting that the source of the sounds remains undetermined.
