Blind Color-Matching Test with Zhora: Bidirectional Color–Word Recognition in a Trained Horse
This video documents a blind color-matching test with Zhora, a trained horse, using bidirectional color–word recognition. The test included two related tasks. In the first part, four color cards were placed on a stand in front of the horse. I held four cards with written color names and showed one card first to the camera and then to Zhora. The horse then had to select the corresponding color card from the stand. In the second part, the procedure was reversed. The written color-name cards were placed on the stand, and I held the color cards in my hand. I showed one color card first to the camera and then to the horse, and Zhora had to select the corresponding written color name from the stand. In both parts of the test, I did not know which card I was presenting to the horse. I could see only the blank reverse side of the card, and the reverse sides of the cards were visually identical. This blind method was used to reduce the possibility of conscious or unconscious cueing from the handler. After seeing the cue card, Zhora walked to the stand and selected the matching card. I walked beside him near the shoulder, trying not to interfere with his choice, but staying close enough to take the selected card and show the result to the camera. The cards in my hand were regularly reshuffled, approximately after every three trials, so that I could not predict which cue would be presented next. The cards on the stand were also placed in a random order, so that the horse had to respond to the visual or written cue rather than to a fixed position. Unlike some sessions with other horses, Zhora maintained good motivation and did not noticeably lose willingness to continue toward the end of the test. As far as I can determine from the video, he did not make any clear errors in this session. This test is part of an ongoing series of blind procedures designed to document symbolic recognition, color-word association, visual discrimination, and voluntary cognitive performance in trained horses. The aim is to develop clearer protocols for studying whether horses can use symbolic cues to make controlled choices under blind conditions, without relying on visible guidance from the human handler. #horse #horses #friesianhorse #friesian #blackhorse #smarthorse #intelligenthorse #thinkinghorse #trainedhorse #horseintelligence #equinecognition #animalcognition #animalintelligence #horsetraining #horselearning #animallearning #blindtest #horsetest #horseexperiment #colorrecognition #colorwordrecognition #symbolicrecognition #symboliclearning #cognitivetest #cognitivetask #horsebehavior #horsecommunication #nonverbalcommunication #horsescience #equinescience #readinghorse #horsereading #amazinghorse #uniquehorse #libertyhorse #horselover #horselife #equestrian
