Gong bath lasting 7.5 hours is also known as a gong puja. The word Puja from Sanskrit, means reverence, honour, adoration and worship. It is also a ritual performed by Hindus, in which one or more deities are represented by an image or figure and their presence invoked by payers. This is followed by the offering of light, flowers, water and food. Puja is also a part of Buddhist tradition, dating back to time when flowers were offered to Buddha on his arrival at a new place during his travels. The Gong Puja was made popular by the Grand Gongmaster Don Conreaux from America who has written books and essays about gong playing. He has been performing and teaching the art of gong playing for meditation and well being for over 50 years. Don Conreaux studied with Yogi Bhajan who is said to have brought the teaching and practice of Kundalini yoga to the west. Yogi Bhajan was also influential in spreading the use of the gong from India to the western world as an instrument for meditation and healing. During a Gong puja the gongs are played continuously and at low level for 7 and a half hours, this being the equivalent of 10 gong baths. The sound of the gongs playing allow the listener to experience a state of deep relaxation and sleep often drifting from one to the other.
