It was also one of the most important, leading directly to the fall of the Third Reich in Western Europe. Yet whenever most people think of the day, it is through the lens of a single battle featuring men in higgins boats hitting a fortified beach. Little is appreciated of the wider circumstances that led to those fateful and iconic events.
