Talking about childbirth also means questioning practices that have been normalized for decades. In this episode, we discuss respectful childbirth, obstetric interventions that scientific evidence no longer routinely recommends, and how consent, autonomy, and access to information remain rights that are too often violated during childbirth care. We are joined by Dr. María Argüello, a gynecologist and obstetrician specializing in home birth and an ally of Médicas, to analyze hospital births, home births, and what the evidence actually says. Together, we debunk myths and pose an uncomfortable question: how many of the practices currently used are based on science, and how many are based on custom, hierarchy, or the organization of the healthcare system? Because obstetric violence is not always recognized as such. It also occurs when procedures are performed without sufficient information, without consent, or without respect for the decisions of the person giving birth. Giving birth with dignity, autonomy, and evidence-based care shouldn't depend on where you're born or the healthcare professional attending the delivery.
