A new armed attack against a public transport vehicle was reported in the Comas district. A hitman fired on a Santa Cruz bus while it was in service with passengers on board, leaving bullet holes in the windshield and the passenger door. According to a company representative, the attacker pretended to be a passenger about to board the vehicle. However, the driver noticed the man pulling a firearm from his waistband and accelerated to avoid the attack, although the assailant managed to fire several shots. After the attack, the criminals left an extortion note next to the vehicle. The company representative stated that the driver was deeply affected by the incident due to the risk he faced while performing his duties. ALLARMING STATISTICS Violence against public transport continues to rise. According to figures from the Public Prosecutor's Office, between January 1 and July 17, 107 attacks with victims were recorded against public transportation in Lima and Callao, a figure that equals the total reported during all of 2015. This situation is also reflected in extortion reports. Between January and June of this year alone, the Public Prosecutor's Office received 12,634 reports of this crime nationwide, an average of over a thousand cases per month.
