Chasing the Wind: The Southern Straits Regatta & Dundarave Festival ⛵️ | Festival Fix 🇨🇦

There is something undeniably "West Coast" about a rainy April morning in West Vancouver. ☕️ Today, I’m heading out to catch a "Festival Fix" at the Southern Straits Regatta and Dundarave Festival. The morning started exactly where every good West Van adventure should: at Delaney’s Coffee in Dundarave Village. Nothing beats a warm mocha while watching the mist roll off the Burrard Inlet before a big race start. 🛶 From the village, I made my way down the hill toward Dundarave Beach. If you’ve spent any time in this part of the world, you know that the geography here is the real boss. The steep mountains of the North Shore meet the sea so abruptly that the environment has always dictated how we live, work, and play. Before the bridges were built, this water was the only highway we had, and that maritime DNA is still pulsing through the community today. 🌊 The heart of the festival was in full swing by the time I hit the sand. I managed to snag some legendary Lions Club pancakes (extra syrup, obviously) while the West Vancouver Pops Band provided the perfect soundtrack to a gray but vibrant morning. There is such a unique sense of "gathering at the edge" here. Whether it was the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) People navigating these currents in cedar canoes for millennia, or the families huddled on the pier today, the shoreline has always been our collective meeting place. 🥞🎺 As the Southern Straits Regatta officially kicked off, the energy shifted. Seeing those sailboats catch the wind and wrestle with the unpredictable currents of the inlet is a reminder that even in 2026, nature still calls the shots. We explored the history of the local sailing clubs that defined the social fabric of Metro Vancouver and looked back at archival images from the City of Vancouver Archives to see how much—and how little—has changed in a century of racing. 🏆 This vlog isn't just about a boat race; it’s a look at the environmental history that shaped West Vancouver. We dive into the the Indigenous roots of the shoreline, and the enduring maritime soul that makes this region what it is. It was quite the experience to see several hundred people gathered on the pier, braving the rain to witness a tradition that connects our past to our present. ⚓️ If you enjoyed this deep dive into the culture and history of the North Shore, make sure to hit that subscribe button for more lifestyle vlogs and historical perspectives from around Metro Vancouver.
