Stockholm, Katarinahissen, transportmedlet mellan Slussen och Södermalm. Text, subtitles.

Stockholm, Katarinahissen (Katarina lift/elevator), the means of transport between Slussen and Södermalm. Text, subtitles in English and some other languages. The Katarina elevator/lift was opened for traffic in 1936. The background is that there is a fault slope in northern Södermalm, which means a steep rock wall. The landscape changes from mountains to mud at Slussen. When Södermalm became more densely populated, they wanted to organize a better connection than going up the mountain, on foot or by horse. The first elevator was built back then in 1883. It was called the Elevatorn and existed until 1933, when it was decided to replace it with the current elevator, which was completed in 1936 The Katarina lift was closed in 1910 for safety reasons. Even the surrounding concrete structures for traffic settled and weathered, and parts were shut down. The area at Slussen rests on clay below the fault slope. At great expense, a lot around Slussen has been torn down and new ones built. The Katarina lift was allowed to remain, after a major rebuild, and was reopened in November 2023. The ropes to the lift have had some problems during strong winds, and the lift has periodically been shut down. By April 2024 it was working fine, and then the video was made. .
