S1E1 | The Citadel Mall | Charleston, SC

Citadel Mall is one we've covered before-nearly a decade ago-and even then it was already known throughout the Charleston area as the city's "dead mall." If you had asked most locals whether it would still be standing ten years later, many probably would've said no. Yet, against the odds, Citadel Mall remains. Today, the property is entering a new chapter. MUSC has purchased much of the mall, and the remaining tenants will either relocate into the section of the mall that will continue operating or eventually vacate altogether. The current plan is for approximately one-third of the mall to remain as retail space, while the rest is redeveloped for the new hospital campus. As it stands, the anchor stores will remain, along with the center court anchored by Bath & Body Works and the corridor leading toward the food court. Will consolidating the remaining retailers into a smaller footprint give Citadel Mall a second chance? We don’t know, but you can certainly follow our journey here, and on our other platforms.
