#174: Emily Chancellor (Rugby Union) Relentless, Joyful and Playing for Connection
In this episode of Scoreboard, Chris Titley welcomes Emily Chancellor, Wallaroos back rower and Waratahs leader, for a thoughtful conversation about rugby, connection, pressure and the joy that still sits at the heart of why she plays. Fresh off her Barbarians experience in the UK, Emily reflects on what made the week so special, from meeting teammates from around the world to building trust quickly and playing for the love of the game. She talks about rugby as a place of challenge, friendship and shared experience, and why the Barbarians felt like such a clear reminder of what the sport can give. Emily also looks back on her late start in rugby, growing up watching the game with her dad, playing netball and swimming, and then giving Sevens a go after a university email opened the door. From there, she found her way into 15s, where the physicality, strategy and team-first nature of the game quickly felt like the place she was meant to be. The conversation moves into performance, preparation and the lessons that come with experience. Emily shares how her pre-game routines have changed over time, why structure and superstition both have their place, and how she has learned to trust the work she has already done. She also explains her on-field alter ego, a smiling assassin crossed with a Tasmanian devil, and why having more fun than everyone else can be a genuine competitive edge. There is also plenty on leadership, both in rugby and in the workplace. Emily talks about leading through actions, owning your craft, seeking feedback, making quick decisions under pressure, and the trust that comes from spending real time with teammates. Her work in people and culture at Richard Crookes Construction has also given her a new way to think about leadership, standards and how people want to be treated. 🔗 Show notes This episode was Powered by Swyftx — Where can crypto take you?👉 https://swyftx.com/about/...
