$Million Off-Grid Cabin | The Kilcher Octagon

This cabin has been part of our family for generations — and for nine years, it's been waiting for a wood stove. Today that changes. I head down to the far end of the homestead to check on our off-grid octagon cabin — a place many of you will recognize from Alaska: The Last Frontier. But getting there means crossing a glaciated trail with a 400-foot drop to the beach below, and what I find when I arrive makes it clear: this place needs some serious love before I can bring my kids camping here. The plan? Install a wood stove. Simple enough — until the stove falls off the trailer, I forget my hammer, forget my tape measure, get stuck on a hill with a four-wheeler, and end up drilling a hole through metal with a .22 rifle because it's the only tool I have. That's homesteading. My dad stops by to weigh in on stove placement (naturally), and by the end of the day we've got fire in the octagon for the first time — warm enough for a sleepover. And when Dad sings the same lullaby to my kids that he used to sing to me... well. That's why we do all of this. In this video: Crossing a glaciated trail with a serious drop on one side Digging through Dad's legendary boneyard for a free wood stove Installing a double-wall insulated chimney from scratch The stove falling off the trailer mid-weld (classic) Drilling with a .22 because sometimes that's all you've got First fire in the octagon — nine years in the making A three-generation family night and a lullaby that'll get you "Looking around the octagon tonight, it's hard not to think about all the hands that have worked on these logs. It's more than just a cabin. It's a timeline of our family." If you’re new here: We’re the Kilchers—2nd and 3rd generation Alaska homesteaders.
