In October 2023, a double attack by a brown bear occurred on Mt. Daisengen in Fukushima Town, Oshima District, Hokkaido. A 22-year-old fourth-year student at Hokkaido University disappeared while hiking alone and was found three days later covered in soil and branches. On October 31st, during a reconnaissance mission for the search, one of three firefighters, Katsushi Funaita, was attacked by a brown bear approximately 1.7 meters long. Takumi Ohara intervened, using a 5-centimeter-long foraging knife to stab the bear in the throat and repel it. All three survived. Hokkaido Prefecture and the Hokkaido Research Organization analyzed the incident as "an extremely unusual act of a bear that showed no fear of humans and actively attacked."
