A magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck the coast of Chiapas early Friday morning, with its epicenter southwest of Ciudad Hidalgo, near the Guatemalan border. The tremor was also felt in Guatemala, El Salvador, and parts of central Mexico. So far, authorities have reported minor damage and more than 50 aftershocks, the largest measuring 6.5. Grupo Fórmula's correspondent in Chiapas, Iram Salas, reported that Civil Protection activated emergency protocols, while Governor Eduardo Ramírez ordered the suspension of work at state offices and called on the private sector to prioritize public safety. Additionally, the beaches of Puerto Madero remain closed as a precautionary measure. Authorities also explained that Chiapas is not yet integrated into the Mexican Seismic Alert System (SASMEX), so no alerts sounded during the earthquake.
