We have borrowed photographic records of the construction process from Mr. Miyanishi, who built a 1/350 scale Typhoon radio-controlled submarine, and will introduce it with explanations. This is an ambitious project featuring a pump ballast system on a hull approximately 50 cm in length. Twin propellers are driven by two motors, and the turning ability is further enhanced by creating a difference in rotation during turns. The pump ballast system uses a propeller installed on the underside of the hull to expel water from a tank. At this time, air is drawn in through the snorkel intake on the sail, so the sail must be above the waterline to operate this ballast system. As shown in the video, this ballast system is designed to replicate the submarine's natural draft position; when the water is drained, the buoyancy increases, preventing it from diving during dynamic dives. While Mr. Miyanishi's previous U-boat models used piston ballast to maintain neutral buoyancy underwater after the pump ballast, this Typhoon model cannot accommodate piston ballast due to its small hull size. One option is to eliminate the pump ballast and use only piston ballast, but then the submarine cannot surface to its intended draft. While piston ballast allows for underwater stationary movement, fixed-point diving, and surfacing, this design prioritizes the feel of surface movement. When moving, it can create a three-dimensional trajectory with dynamic dives underwater, so the design philosophy behind this Typhoon-class submarine by Mr. Miyanishi is to strike a balance between the best aspects of both. Radio-controlled submarines are a fascinating genre because of the various combinations of diving methods and hull design elements. There's no single right answer, and figuring that out is part of the fun of building radio-controlled submarines.
