Description: Footage from the occupation of the Thessaloniki Medical School filmed in December 1979. These are the first occupations of university schools in Greece after the fall of the Dictatorship. The reason of the occupation was Law 815, which was created by the Karamanlis Government and, among other things, wanted to reduce examinations from three to two and to impose a maximum duration of studies. Other things concerned the "auxiliary" teaching staff of the Universities and the abolishment of university asylum. The National Student Union of Greece, which was then dominated by the Communist Party and Pasok Party Student Unions, reacted to these measures in moderation, resulting in the movement of left-wing non-parliamentary organizations and independent students taking the lead in occupations and demonstrations. On December 3, 1979, the Athens Chemistry School was occupied, and occupations were generalized after December 10th. In the film we watch various occupation activities in the buildings of the Medical School (radio, concerts, etc.), as well as footage of everyday life and the slogans that characterised the movement. We also watch footage of demonstration on the road with police standing near the Macedonia-Thrace Ministry.
