Roosevelt's personal C-54, dubbed the "Sacred Cow," was modified with an elevator for his wheelchair and became the prototype for modern presidential aircraft. But its importance went beyond cargo. The C-54 was used to transport supplies to China during the war, often in deadly weather conditions. And in 1948, it played a crucial role in the Berlin Airlift, a massive operation to supply a city of over 2 million people entirely by air. Well, the C-47 Skytrain was excellent for battlefield logistics, but it couldn't compete with the C-54's range and payload for transoceanic operations.
