On September 1, 1996, amid the worry and fear of the Argentine fans present at the Monumental Stadium, Chilavert settled himself, looked at Burgos, and unleashed a lethal left-footed shot that made it 1-1, a score that would remain until the final whistle. Chilavert would later comment that Pablo Cavallero, his backup at Vélez Sarsfield and Burgos's backup on the national team, had asked him about his free-kick technique. The Paraguayan goalkeeper suspected that his colleague would pass the information on to Burgos, so he gave him "fake news"—although the term didn't exist back then—about the number of steps he would take if he shot over or to the side of the wall.
