They fought on the most dangerous island in the Pacific. They bled on black volcanic sand. They raised a flag that nobody photographed. Then America built a monument — and left them out. This is the story of the Montford Point Marines — the Black men who served at Iwo Jima in 1945 while the country they were fighting for still refused to treat them as equals. They were given the most dangerous support roles, placed under direct fire, and performed acts of extraordinary courage that were never recorded, never decorated, and never taught in schools. The photograph the world knows shows six men and a flag. It does not show the 900 Black Marines who made that moment possible.
