Trani, in ancient times Turenum, is a southern Italian port city in the Apulia region, Barletta-Andria-Trani province with 56,011 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). Until the end of 2007 the city was part of the province of Bari. In the Middle Ages, some buildings were built in Trani that are probably unique in Italy. The imposing cathedral has been an orientation aid for seafarers on the Adriatic for centuries. At that time, the strategically well-located port of Trani was the starting point for trade and numerous crusades. At the northern end of the harbor, a fascinating building in the Romanesque style was erected with the cathedral. The attractive building with its cream-white facade made of lime is almost reminiscent of a mighty fortress. Just around 100 meters from the cathedral is another architectural attraction of Trani, the castle of Emperor Frederick II, which was completed in 1233. There are huge towers at the corners of the square castle, and despite the restoration, the basic structure of the past has been retained.
