In 1991, the railway line between Nijmegen and the German city of Kleve was closed. Passenger service on the line was relatively limited in the latter period. It was mainly short trains consisting of at least one carriage with a diesel locomotive. Several stations had already closed, and despite demand, the line did not stop at Nijmegen Heyendaal.
