Machu Picchu has stood for almost five centuries on a steep ridge in the Peruvian Andes, where about two meters of rain falls annually. Why didn't the ancient city slide down the slope or collapse during earthquakes? The answer is hidden underground: about 60% of all Inca efforts went into invisible drainage, foundations, and gravel layers. Tourists photograph the walls, but the builders' real work lies meters below, like the underwater part of an iceberg. This episode examines the city's engineering without mysticism or legends: dry masonry without mortar, trapezoidal openings and walls that "dance" during tremors, approximately 700 terraces holding the slope, a 749-meter-long stone channel with 16 fountains, about 130 drainage holes in the walls, and the geology of the faults on which the city was built quite intentionally. The city was discovered in 1911 by historian Hiram Bingham, and 80 years later, engineer Kenneth Wright unearthed what was hidden beneath the grass.
