Lifting up St Michaelis (Michel) in Hamburg, Germany
St Michaelis and the tower (known as "Michel") is a very popular tourist attraction in Hamburg. The only elevator going up the tower features swing doors - which is very nice for a tourist elevator! It starts from floor 1 and travels to an observation platform. The original first elevator has been built in 1909 after the previous church burned down to the grounds. It is yet unknown if the elevator has been modernized and how much, but it has been replaced by a new posh elevator in 2013. The elevator does not go to the ground floor, you have to walk one floor (52 steps in total) to reach it. There is no elevator connecting to the main elevator hall. Our Michel Aufzug goes up from "floor 0" and travels to the platform , which is floor 10. On the way up it passes several floors which are locked off on the cab operating panel. Same story also applies to the callbuttons on these floors, since you can actually walk the stairs too and see the elevator on the other floors too - you can see it, but not call it without key. Getting to St Michaelis by public transport is pretty easy. Take U3 train to either Rödingsmarkt or St. Pauli station, where you can use the MetroBus line 6 to reach your destination - "Michaeliskirche" bus stop. It costs 5€ to get into the tower and ride the elevator. Other options are S-Bahn trains to Stadthausbrücke and a short walk or the express bus 37, which costs an extra fee.
