STORYLINE HIRST'S GOLDEN CALF SELLS FOR �9,200,000 British artist Damien Hirst sold one of his major works, The Golden Calf today (15 September 2008) at an auction at Sotheby's in London. The Golden Calf sold to the highest bidder for nine million, two hundred thousand pounds. Hirst is selling 223 new works directly through the two-day London auction. The artist says he decided to auction off his work immediately as commerce makes his work feel alive, and because he knew it would annoy people. The series of new pieces has taken two years to create. Hirst says that apart from the Golden Calf, the 'unicorn' in formaldehyde is his own favourite piece because of its magical quality. Hirst, who's 43, is among the best known of the "Young British Artists" or YBAs who came to prominence in the 1990s.
