The Second Italian War of Independence was an episode of the Risorgimento. It was fought by France and the Kingdom of Sardinia against Austria from April 27, 1859, to July 12, 1859. The war's prologue was the Plombières Accords of July 21, 1858, and the Sardinian-French alliance of January 1859, with which the Kingdom of Sardinia and France prepared for war against Austria. It opened in April 1859 with Austria's attack on the Kingdom of Sardinia, which had refused to demobilize its army. It continued with a series of military victories for the Sardinian-French alliance, including the Battle of Magenta and the Battle of Solferino and San Martino. It ended with the Armistice of Villafranca and the defeat of Austria, which was forced to cede Lombardy to France, which was then handed over to the Kingdom of Sardinia.
