In many olive groves, pit lignification has begun, a delicate physiological phase in which auxins, abscisic acid, and gibberellins modulate the synthesis of lignin and phenolic compounds that progressively stiffen the kernel. The process proceeds with some variability related to the temperature fluctuations of late June, but without significant anomalies. Physiological fruit drop is present, as expected at this stage, but is not particularly pronounced. The olives that fall show the typical signs of natural detachment, a progressive yellowing, slight basal browning, or stunted growth. In some olive groves, drupes are observed that detach while still green and, when sectioned, reveal small spherical or ovoid tissues. These are parthenocarpic fruits, which developed in the absence of ovarian fertilization. Their presence is consistent with the irregular climatic conditions of flowering, which have reduced the percentage of complete fertilization. Only in some situations are drupes noted with more marked blackening or microlesions attributable to the trophic activity of insects such as the brown marmorated stink bug. This is not a primary olive phytophagous, but its bites can precipitate the detachment of already physiologically weak fruits. In other cases, small internal necroses may suggest the intervention of opportunistic pathogens, which thrive in plants subjected to water or heat stress. One factor to consider in 2026 is the internal temperature of the drupe. When the air reaches 32–33°C, the flesh temperature can exceed the ambient temperature by 0.5–2°C, especially in lightly shaded canopies, with poor ventilation, or on dark drupes that absorb more radiation. Under these conditions, the flesh can easily reach 33–35°C, values that interfere with stone lignification and increase the likelihood of detachment of smaller or less developed fruits. This is a present but not dominant phenomenon and mainly affects plants under water stress or in warmer exposures. Overall, the 2026 phenology shows an olive tree progressing steadily toward lignification, with limited physiological drop and thermal sensitivity that requires attention in warmer exposures. Water management, natural canopy shading, and the use of reflective mineral powders can help stabilize fruit temperature and further reduce drupe loss at this stage. Phytosanitary Control Olive fruit fly (Bactrocera oleae): Weekly trap checks confirm that captures have not shown significant increases. Initial sampling reveals taste bites, while egg-laying is rare and concentrated almost exclusively on certain table varieties. However, olives are already fully receptive: this means that the female's olfactory system is physiologically ready for egg-laying and that any microclimate change can alter the fly's behavior. The decreases in temperature and increases in humidity recorded between Sunday, July 6th and Tuesday, July 9th may have favored adult activity, which is why careful and continuous monitoring is essential. For those who have chosen anti-egg-laying and repellent strategies, such as the application of rock powders—particularly kaolin and bentonite—this is the ideal time to intervene. These mineral tools create a physical barrier that discourages the female from oviposition, interfering with the tactile and visual cues that guide fruit selection. When preparing the mixture, it's necessary to add wetting and tackifiers to improve adhesion and coverage of leaf and fruit surfaces. The canopy must be wetted evenly, reaching even the inner parts, because only complete coverage guarantees effective protection. Sprayer calibration requires particular attention: droplet distribution must be even, without excess falling to the ground and without areas of vegetation shadow. Correct adjustment allows for optimized treatment and avoids waste. In addition to their anti-deposition effect, mineral powders play a protective role against heatstroke: the whitish film that forms on the vegetation reflects part of the solar radiation, reduces evapotranspiration, and helps maintain more stable humidity in plant tissues, a particularly important aspect on the hottest days of this summer of 2026. ...
