Sutton Coldfield before Veysey - a talk by Dr Andrew Watkins

This is a recording of a talk given over Zoom, hosted by FOLIO Sutton Coldfield, in support of Sutton Coldfield Local History Research Group (https://sclhrg.org.uk/), given by Dr Andrew Watkins in January 2021. New research using a range of documents not previously employed by historians provides fresh insights into the foundation, growth and fortunes of the town of Great Sutton in the later middle ages. This has focussed on the role of the earls of Warwick in its creation, the importance of the market and fair, the local economy, occupational diversity and piety. In this talk Dr Andrew Watkins explores what Sutton Coldfield was like before Veysey, examining the fortunes of the town of Great Sutton in the later middle ages. Andrew Watkins studied under Christopher Dyer at the University of Birmingham and is an Honorary Visiting Research Fellow at the Centre for English Local History at the University of Leicester. He retired as Head of Sixth Form at Lichfield Cathedral School in 2016 after thirty years of school teaching. He has published numerous articles on society and economy in the later medieval Warwickshire Arden, with a special focus on its small towns and their interaction with their hinterlands. He is editor of Warwickshire History. If you enjoyed this talk please consider making a donation to FOLIO so we can book more speakers in the future.
