Luther Makekau and his knowledge of kapa, the Hawaiian language, hula skirts, music and taro

A clip from Eddie & Myrna Kamae's 1997 documentary film, "Luther Kahekili Makekau: A One Kine Hawaiian Man." Luther's knowledge of Hawaiian cultural traditions was extraordinary; from the language to kapa making, he was full of surprises with a sharp mind that remained sharp until the end of his 98 years. Luther said the reason he knew so much was that he used to listen to the elders; he was always so quiet, they didn't know he was there. This clip features stories about Luther sharing knowledge with Pua Van Dorpe about kapa making, the Hawaiian language with Tomas Belsky, and taro with Henry Auwae. Fred Kalani Meinecke noted that Luther drew upon the wisdom of the ancients. Visit eddiekamaesongbook.org/luthermakekau to learn more about the film.
