For many people, hearing loss is due to damage to the hair cells in the inner ear (cochlea). The cochlear implant enables the transmission of audio signals to the auditory nerves, thus enabling hearing. This process is described below: 1. A sound processor, worn behind the ear or on the body, captures audio signals and converts them into digital code. A battery module inside the sound processor supplies power to the entire system. 2. The sound processor transmits the digitally encoded signals through the transmitting coil located on the side of the head to the implant under the skin. 3. The implant converts the digitally encoded audio signals into electrical impulses and transmits them to the electrode array in the cochlea (part of the inner ear). 4. The implant electrodes stimulate the auditory nerve in the cochlea, from where the signal impulses are transmitted to the brain, where auditory perception occurs. A cochlear implant system consists of two components: an external sound processor; an inner ear implant, which is inserted under the skin by a surgeon. The implant contains an electrode array that is inserted into the cochlea.
