0:00 The Gospel of the Day 3:09 The Sermon on the Mount 4 26:13 Resolution of the Day in Honor of the Sacred Heart "As you go, preach, saying, 'The kingdom of heaven is at hand. Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers, cast out demons.'" How beautiful how Jesus mixes walking with words and gestures. The only sermon the world accepts is structured on these verbs: walking, preaching, healing. If we don't walk, our words aren't credible because they're stale. If we don't speak, the message risks being held hostage by the "unspoken." If our words aren't mixed with charity, with working for the poor, with those held hostage by disease and evil, then it's just an exercise in rhetoric. The evangelization that matters is free: "Freely you have received, freely give." Pastoral enterprises don't work because they have significant budgets: "Do not provide gold, silver, or copper in your belts, nor a bag for your journey, nor two tunics, nor sandals, nor a staff (...)". Every pastoral or evangelizing action is founded on a need that has its feet firmly in heaven and therefore works well on earth. If we applied this gospel to our parishes, our communities, our movements, perhaps we would free ourselves of a good deal of frustration and move more quickly, and "if anyone does not welcome you or listen to your words, leave that house or town and shake the dust off your feet". This is not contempt, it is freedom. It is the realistic freedom to which Christ calls us. The Gospel spreads as a provocation and not as an imposition, and precisely because it cannot impose itself, we must also leave the possibility of saying no. The possibility of not being welcomed, of not finding room for what Jesus proclaims and asks. We can suffer from a freely said no, but then we must have the humility not to become paranoid, to know how to live with detachment, just as the earth falls from under our feet when we shake it. This freedom allows us to move forward and meet those who say yes and make room.
