Tubarão is a Brazilian municipality located in the southern state of Santa Catarina. It is located at latitude 28º28'00" south and longitude 49º00'25" west, at an average altitude of 9 meters above sea level, and has an area of ​​301.755 km². According to the IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), the total population recorded in the last census conducted in 2010 was 97,235 inhabitants. According to an estimate by the IBGE, in 2019 the municipality had 105,687 residents. The city's name derives from the Tubarão River, which in Tupi-Guarani was called Tubá-Nharô,[6] "fierce father." Another current version also associates this name with that of a very influential chief who inhabited the region. However, it is not related to the fish of the same name.
