Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appointed intelligence officer Yevheniy Khmara as the new Defense Minister. Parliament had previously approved a new government headed by energy manager Serhiy Koretskyi. The dismissal of the previous Defense Minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, had sparked outrage nationwide. In Kyiv and other cities, more than a thousand people took to the streets to demand the reinstatement of the 35-year-old. Fedorov had attempted to modernize the army and reduce bureaucracy. After his dismissal, he accused army chief Oleksandr Syrskyi of blocking reforms and dividing the country. Syrskyi, criticized for his rigid leadership and high troop casualties, rejected the accusations and called for a focus on defending the country. A high-ranking air force commander also resigned in protest against Fedorov's dismissal. Fedorov declined an offer from Zelenskyi to serve as an advisor. The president unexpectedly announced the cabinet reshuffle on Sunday, citing the need for renewal. The domestic turmoil comes at a critical stage in the war, which has now lasted more than four years. Although Ukraine has recently achieved successes by targeting Russian logistics, troops on the eastern front are under pressure. There is a shortage of soldiers and air defense systems, while Russia is intensifying its ballistic missile attacks.
