Understanding the Origins of the Compilation of the Quran The origins of the compilation of the Quran began during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), when revelations descended gradually over 23 years and were recorded in various media by scribes such as Zaid ibn Thabit, but not yet compiled into a book. Then, during the reign of Caliph Abu Bakr, the first compilation was made into a single Mushaf after many memorizers were martyred, led by Zaid ibn Thabit. The final refinement and compilation into a standard Mushaf occurred during the reign of Caliph Uthman ibn Affan to unify the readings and eliminate differences.
