The Denver and Rio Grande Western once boasted the largest narrow gauge railway system in the United States. In this episode of Train Talk, we will examine the history and lines of this system as well as the Rio Grande Southern Railroad. These two railroads played a critical role in developing the economies of Colorado and New Mexico during the late 1800s and into the 1900s. Surviving portions of the railroad and pieces of railroad equipment continue to tell the amazing story of the Rio Grande.
