Burglars in Dark: Brutal 1896 Muswell Hill Murder of an Elderly Recluse | The Bedside Historian

The candles have burned low, and the world has grown quiet. Settle in, and let us drift back together to a winter night in 1896, to a half-built suburb on the northern edge of London, where the gas-lamps stood far apart, and an ancient wood pressed dark against the back of every garden. This is the story of Muswell Lodge, and of the seventy-nine-year-old retired engineer who lived there alone behind shutters and bolts and a trip-wire of his own careful design — and of the single small toy lantern, bought for fourpence, that would in time undo the two men who crossed the wood that night. It is a story of the Victorian city and its uneasy edges, of the patient machinery of Scotland Yard, of the last triple hanging at Newgate Prison, and of a quiet street that still stands today where the Lodge once stood. Told in ten self-contained chapters, each one a slow, atmospheric narration designed to be listened to as you fall asleep. There is no need to follow every thread. Let the words carry you down gently. The history will keep. Where in the world are you listening from tonight, and what hour shows on your clock? Leave a note in the comments — it is good to know who keeps the candle with us. If this quiet work helps you rest, please like the video and subscribe to The Bedside Historian. It helps the channel grow, and lets these stories find the people who need them.
