Andrew Wiese | Data Science Approaches to Maternal and Child Opioid Outcomes | MPRINT 2026 | Day 4

Leveraging Data Science to Understand Outcomes for Mothers and Children Affected by Opioids: VICE MPRINT-Project 2 Presented by Andrew Wiese, PhD, MPH Assistant Professor, Department of Health Policy Vanderbilt University Medical Center Recorded 4/16/2026 at the 2026 MPRINT Annual Meeting. In this presentation, Dr. Andrew Wiese discusses Project 2 of the Vanderbilt Innovation Center of Excellence (VICE) MPRINT initiative, which leverages large-scale healthcare data and advanced analytic methods to better understand outcomes among mothers and children affected by opioid exposure. The opioid epidemic continues to have significant impacts on maternal and child health, yet important questions remain regarding long-term outcomes, treatment effectiveness, and healthcare utilization patterns. Dr. Wiese reviews the challenges of studying opioid-related outcomes in maternal and pediatric populations and highlights opportunities created by large administrative databases, electronic health records, birth registries, and linked healthcare datasets. These resources allow investigators to evaluate outcomes across large populations while capturing real-world patterns of care. The presentation describes data science approaches used to identify maternal opioid exposure, characterize treatment pathways, and assess outcomes among mothers and children. Dr. Wiese discusses methods for addressing confounding, selection bias, and missing data in observational research, emphasizing the importance of rigorous study design when generating evidence from real-world healthcare data. Examples are presented examining maternal opioid use disorder, medication-assisted treatment, neonatal outcomes, and longer-term child health trajectories. The project aims to generate evidence that can inform clinical practice, public health policy, and future interventions designed to improve outcomes for families affected by opioid exposure.
