Mencía Calderón, an Extremadura native from Medellín, was the wife of the adelantado of the Río de la Plata, Juan de Sanabria. Upon his death, she was forced to command the first expedition to the Americas, led by a woman. A caravan of women traveled on it, eager to marry the conquistadors settled in the Río de la Plata. This journey, fraught with hardship and misfortune, lasted more than six years. But in the end, the adelantado Mencía Calderón brought 21 women to Asunción, who formed Creole and mestizo families.
