The Columbia Neighborhood - Bellingham Neighborhood Series
Real Estate listings in the Columbia Neighborhood: https://www.buyermax.com/columbia The tree-topped Columbia neighborhood lies north of the downtown core and is nested between Squalicum Creek and Meridian Street, with Bellingham Bay directly to the south. The main vein of the neighborhood Elm Street, which eventually turns into Northwest Avenue. Columbia is a predominately residential neighborhood, with around 1600 single-family homes held within. The neighborhood is characterized by its narrow, tree-topped streets, giving it a tranquil and cozy vibe. Development for the neighborhood initially began around 1880 and has seen about 100 years of growth since, with 90% of the homes being older than 30 years. The Eldridge Historic District, the oldest part of the neighborhood, rests to the south and consists of the homes along Eldridge Avenue. Residents on the southern side of this road can enjoy fantastic views of Bellingham Bay in homes with some of Bellingham’s oldest, most unique architecture. Towards the north newer developments can be found, as well as wider streets, setting it apart from the majority of the neighborhood. Along with residential sectors, Columbia has two commercial areas. Following Meridian Street on the eastern edge of the neighborhood lies the Fountain District, which is zoned as an urban village. Here older houses and newer buildings harbor small businesses and restaurants. Located at the northern tip of the neighborhood is the Northwest Avenue commercial area, which eventually flows into the northwestern edge of Bellingham’s city limits. Columbia contains Elizabeth Park and several other smaller parks. Elizabeth Park, much like the rest of the neighborhood, is blanketed with large trees. Inside the park, you can find plenty of open space, tennis courts, a playground, and a gazebo for relaxing in the shade. On the western edge of the neighborhood runs Squalicum Creek. Houses that border this creek can enjoy private green spaces and the peaceful sound of running water. Families living here can expect their children to attend either Columbia or Parkview Elementary, followed by Whatcom Middle School and Bellingham High School. Columbia is a charismatic neighborhood made up of old and historic architecture. The tree-toped streets and interesting landscaping make it a serene place to live, which is why over 4000 people live here.
