They're Not Selling You a Character

I played a gacha game where the characters weren't designed in a meeting — they were pulled out of Dostoevsky, Kafka, and actual literature, with the weight still on them. And once you see what that looks like, it's hard to look at the rest of the genre the same way. This video isn't "Limbus good, your game bad." The other studios are genuinely talented — Hoyo builds characters like a luxury brand, and that craft is real. But there's a ceiling on a character built to be sold to you, and Limbus Company proved you don't have to accept that ceiling. Rodion is Raskolnikov from Crime and Punishment. Gregor is Gregor Samsa from Kafka's Metamorphosis — they even tattooed the book's German word for "vermin" on his arm. You play as Dante, leading twelve Sinners through a hellish city, guided by Vergilius — the whole game is the Divine Comedy. I'm honest about where I'm standing: I'm early, only a few Cantos in, and I've only played the chapters the community itself calls the weakest. And it STILL does this. That's the whole point — a bad Limbus chapter is still adapting Dostoevsky, while a great chapter in most other gachas is, underneath everything, still trying to sell you the character. So the real question this video asks: do you love your favorite character for who they actually are, or for how they look and how they feel to play? No wrong answer.
