His composing ability which he had acquired assiduously from observing his seniors and various music directors under whom he sang in his initial years of his entry to film music in the late 1940s and during the 1950s. Many songs he composed reflected his profound knowledge in Carnatic music and his penchant for adopting classical ragas in his compositions. Not only his songs on Lord Muruga but his devotional songs in general - the sheer joy that we derive in listening to these melodies is something heavenly. The way he handled raga Bagesri in Kandhan thiruneeranindhal is totally amazing. The second charanam starting with ‘Manam migundha sambaliliey’ is soaked in bhakthi. Of course, his bhava-laden singing with flawless enunciation is well-known. Can there be a better Hindholam so mellifluous and so appealing like Karpanai endralum? TMS had a unique sense of orchestration that is revealed in his Muruganai kooppittu song. Set in raga Charukesi, with just a harmonium and a tabla, bare minimum accompaniments required for a song, it is a lingering melody. In most of his early compositions, clarionet was predominantly used that gave a unique charm to his tunes. In Vallal perumaithannai how beautifully the clarionet sound heightens the beauty of the song! The arrangement and the orchestration in the song Andavan arulpera aasaippadu are simply captivating and in another ‘viruttam’, Sollumoru kalaignana commencing with Sudha Dhanyasi, the tune meanders its way taking in its course ragas Thilang, Charukesi and finally Bagesri. What an aural treat TMS ensures! In the popular Mangalamai vazha vaendum set in Surutti raga, TMS composed it similar to M. K. T Bhagavathar’s Sivaperuman krupai vaendum (Naveena Sarangadara) and even sang exactly like Bhagavathar, his idol. Another song he imitated Bhagavathar is Kandha unaiyandri in Saramathi similar to Unaiyallal oru (film Rajamukthi). TMS happened to listen to a muslim beggar boy singing Ullam urugudhaiyya and soon picked up the lyrics written by Andavan pichchai and composed in raga Bhimpalas. His handling of this raga is very unique that no other song in this raga is as impressive as this. On repeated listening one can easily observe the influence of many music composers under whom he had sung in some of his compositions . His mentor G.Ramanathan’s influence can be seen in these songs- Ninaithapodhu nee in Sudha Saveri from Thoongaadhu kann thoongaadhu (film Karpukkarasi), Ezhumalaiyaanai enni in Natabhairavi scale from Naan pettra selvam {film Naan Pettra Selvam), Thiruvarangam ennum in Lalitha Panchamam from Nilavey nee indha (film Pattinathar). Veteran music director S.V.Venkataraman’s in one song–Inimaiyuram inbhathamizh in Mohanam from Paruvam paarthu (Marudhanaattu veeran). Composer K.V.Mahadevan’s in these – Thillaiyiley vilangum in Gowrimanohari from Paattum naaney (film Thiruvilaiyadal) Endhavinai aanaalum in Peelu from Malargaliley pala niram (film Thirumal perumai) and Unaippaadum thozhilindri from Sithamellaam enakku (Thiruvarutchelvar). Viswanathan-Ramamurthy’s in Natarajanin dharisanamey in Lathangi from Aadadha manamum (Mannadhi mannan) and MSV’s, very brilliantly in Thaenpaagum sarkkaraiyum from Chellakkiligalaam palliyiley (Enga mama). But there are hundreds of songs that TMS composed are absolutely original and very unique in their style and orchestration. Particular mention must be made about Azhagendra sollukku and Thithikkum thaenpaagum. The soulful rendition and the devotional fervour the songs exude take one to an altogether different plane . Some other immensely popular songs like Innamun thiruvullamey (Sahana), Shanmugha vadivela (Subhapantuvarali), Kodimurai padinaalum (Kurinji), Adhaaram nin thiru (Charukesi), Muruga endrazhaikkava (Senchurutti), Paadavaithaan andha (Khamas), Arudhal arulvaai (Punnagavarali), Kanchi kamatchi (Jounpuri), Karpagamey unaiyandri (Sivaranjani), Arulvadivaana Karpagamey (Madyamavathi), to cite a few, are unparalleled semi-classical melodies and etched in memory.
