8,500 Japanese Troops Battle In Alaska! The Aleutian Campaign (1942-43)

The Aleutian Islands Campaign (June 1942 – August 1943) was a critical struggle for control of the North Pacific during World War II. It remains the only military campaign of the war fought on North American soil. Both sides recognized the islands' immense strategic value for controlling Pacific transportation routes. Japan sought to block U.S.-Soviet cooperation, while the United States feared the occupied islands could serve as staging grounds for devastating air raids against major West Coast cities. Often overlooked, this "Forgotten War" was overshadowed by larger battles in the South Pacific and Europe and censored to avoid public alarm. Beyond combat, U.S. forces battled lethal sub-arctic weather, dense fog, and 100 mph winds, known as “williwaws," which brought down more aircraft than enemy fire. 👉 Subscribe to Clear and Present History for more:    / @clearpresenthistory   🗽 Join this channel to support American history research:    / @clearpresenthistory   ⭐ GET THE BOOK: The Thousand-Mile War: World War II in Alaska and the Aleutians. The Occupation of Attu and Kiska: The harrowing reality of Japanese forces seizing U.S. territory to protect their northern flank. The Battle of Attu: One of the deadliest battles of the Pacific, culminating in a massive, final Banzai charge against the 7th Infantry Division's cooks, engineers, and medics. The Mystery of Kiska: Why thousands of Allied troops stormed an island only to find the enemy had vanished into the fog during Operation Cottage. The Unangax Internment: The tragic and often forgotten story of the Aleut people’s forced removal and suffering in internment camps during the conflict. Lifeline to the Eastern Front: How holding the Aleutians protected the vital ALSIB (Alaska-Siberia) air route and shipping lanes, ensuring a steady flow of Lend-Lease aid to the Soviet Union for their desperate fight against the Nazis on the Eastern Front.
