SA-SAMS Modernisation: From Patience to Practice as Meyerton Primary Launches the First Test Pilot

Following a provincial onboarding session on 6 March 2026, Meyerton Primary School became the first of twelve pioneer schools to begin piloting the modernised SA-SAMS on 9 March — marking the system’s transition from planning to real use in schools. For several years, the basic education sector has recognised the need to modernise SA-SAMS, the School Administration and Management System used by schools across South Africa. Along the way there have been expectations, questions, and at times understandable frustration from those who rely on the system daily. Yet through it all, the sector has remained patient, recognising that modernising a system of this scale requires careful planning, collaboration, and time. Encouragingly, the journey is now moving beyond plans and discussions and beginning to unfold in practice. The modernised SA-SAMS has been structured around five core modules that mirror how schools operate: Manage School, Manage Learner, Manage Staff, Manage Curriculum, and Manage Assessment. Together, these modules are designed to simplify everyday administrative tasks and return valuable time to educators so they can focus on teaching and learning. A key step in the build-up to the pilot milestone occurred on 6 March 2026, when the Department of Basic Education (DBE), supported by NECT, hosted a breakfast onboarding event for the twelve test pilot schools in Sedibeng East District, Gauteng. The occasion brought together school principals, officials from the Gauteng Department of Education, Sedibeng district leadership, and union representatives who were able to attend. The engagement briefed principals on the pilot activities ahead and the support that would be provided to ensure a smooth deployment, positioning the schools not merely as testing sites but as partners helping to shape the system. Just three days later, on 9 March 2026, at 08:00 to be exact, the project team, comprising officials from the Department of Basic Education and the Sedibeng East District, arrived at Meyerton Primary School to officially unveil the school as the first of the twelve pioneer schools to begin test piloting the modernised SA-SAMS. This marked an important transition for the project: from development and preparation into real use within a working school environment. As expected during a pilot phase, issues experienced during the school testing are carefully logged and channelled back to the technical team for investigation and refinement. Encouragingly, this feedback loop is already functioning efficiently, ensuring that real classroom experiences quickly inform system improvements. Sometimes progress reveals itself in simple but meaningful ways. On the morning of 12 March 2026, just days into the pilot, a teacher at Meyerton Primary shared that completing her class attendance register, which had previously taken noticeably longer during the busy start of the school day, was now done in about one minute using the modernised system. During this same first week, a brief pulse-check survey with the participants testing the system indicated that confidence in adapting to the modernised system is beginning to take root, even as everyone recognises that the test pilot phase remains in its early stages. After years of anticipation, the modernised SA-SAMS is now being tested and refined in real school environments. Beginning with Meyerton Primary and the eleven other pioneer schools in Sedibeng East District, the system has entered the phase where practical feedback will shape its continued development. The early signs are encouraging, and the next chapter of SA-SAMS modernisation is beginning to take shape — one school, one teacher, and one improvement at a time.
