The Glory Departs — and Leaves a Map Home: Ezekiel 11 and the Promise Written in the Journey

Ezekiel 11 brings the departure of God's glory to its final stop — the Mount of Olives — and with it, the close of one of the darkest sections in the book. But the chapter doesn't end in darkness. It opens with 25 civic leaders at the east gate feeding the people a lie: Babylon can't touch us, we're safe inside the city like flesh in a pot. Their confidence is built on a fatal assumption — that God's presence in the temple means His approval of what they're doing in it. The Lord corrects them sharply, and the sermon traces how their false counsel directly contradicted what Jeremiah had already told the people, ultimately multiplying the death toll by convincing men and women not to surrender. Yet even as the glory makes its final move out of the city, God pauses to give Ezekiel — and us — something unexpected: a detailed promise of return. A future regathering, a new heart of flesh, one spirit among all Israel, sinless obedience in the land. The kingdom. And then the sermon pulls back to show what the glory's departure path actually is — a map in reverse. The glory left through the east gate, hovered over the Mount of Olives, and departed. Jesus ministered for three and a half years, ascended from the Mount of Olives, and left. And when He returns, Zechariah and Ezekiel both tell us He comes back the same way He left — touching down on the Mount of Olives first, then retracing every step of the glory's departure, back through the east gate, back into the temple.
