UP Naming Mahal

“UP Naming Mahal” is the official hymn of the University of the Philippines that encapsulates the pledge and commitment of UP students and alumni to serve as the hope of the nation’s future. Originally written as “UP Beloved” by Teogenes Velez, a contest to translate the song to Filipino was held in 1969, but judges could not find a single entry which completely embodied the lyrics of the English version. Composite lyrics from seven contest entries make up the university hymn sung today. Nicanor Abelardo composed the music, which was later rearranged by Hilarion Rubio and Tomas Aguirre with the tempo retained. *** UP Naming Mahal Nicanor Abelardo, music Teogenes Velez, lyrics Josefino Chino Toledo, orchestration Performed by the UP Symphony Orchestra *** UP Naming Mahal U.P. naming mahal, pamantasang hirang Ang tinig namin, sana'y inyong dinggin Malayong lupain, amin mang marating Di rin magbabago ang damdamin Di rin magbabago ang damdamin.
